Overview:

This program is to help individuals who are caring for a family member with Alzheimer's. Expert faculty from the Suncoast Alzheimer's and Gerontology Center will present on various aspects of AD. . Participants will receive a resource packet and lunch.

Five-Day Summer Geriatric  Institute

Dates: June 11, 12, 13, 18,and 19, 2008

Location: Comfort Inn Hotel and Conference Center
820 E. Busch Blvd.
Tampa, Florida
Audience: ARNPs, nurses, ALF and nursing home administrators, social workers, care managers, guardians, mental health counselors, gerontologists, health care administrators, service providers and graduate students. 
Credit: Continuing education will be provided for ARNPs, nurses, ALF and nursing home administrators, social workers, guardians, mental health counselors, psychologists and activity therapists. All attendees will receive a certification of attendance.

This course is also a 3-credit graduate course in the USF School of Aging Studies and can be applied to the graduate certificate programs. For information on taking this as a graduate class, please call Gail Smith at (813) 974-9740.

Topics:  The program will include a variety of topics on current issues in again and practical information on the diagnosis and treatment of  common disorders in the elderly. Check back soon to see a complete list of topics.

Clinical Drug Studies 

There is an extensive amount of research being done on Alzheimer's to identify new medications for treatment and prevention.  Check back often to see what new studies are enrolling. 

We are currently enrolling for the following study:

  • A home based assessment study for persons aged 75 and older to monitor their memory.

Studies we're involved in that are closed to enrollment:

  • A study of a Chinese herb that is used to treat Alzheimer's in China
  • Studies of medications that may prevent the formation or lower the levels of plaque in the brain
  • A study of a new set of memory tests
  • A study of a higher dose of an FDA-approved Alzheimer's drug
  • A study looking at brain changes on MRI with an FDA-approved Alzheimer's drugs
  • A study of an omega-3 fatty acid that may slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease.
