MHA Internship After substantially all of the coursework in the MHA program has been completed the Internship provides the student with an opportunity to apply his/her knowledge to solving management problems in operational health services organizations or health insurance (Managed Care) organizations. Faculty will assist students in identifying Internship opportunities in appropriate organizations, given the student's career interests, but the ultimate responsibility for securing the Internship rests with the student.
The Master of Health Administration Internship at the University of South Florida differs somewhat from other programs in that it is a project-oriented experience. This means that the student (in consultation with the Academic Advisor and the Preceptor) identifies a management problem in the organization which the student will solve during the term of the Internship (which may last from one to three semesters). The problem must not be so large that it cannot be solved within the time limits, nor should it be so small that it is trivial. In the semester prior to beginning the Internship the student will write a proposal which includes the elements in Attachment A. This proposal must be approved by the Advisor and Preceptor in writing prior to the beginning of the Internship. At the end of the Internship the student will write‑up the results and put them into a format similar to a consulting report (still following the format in A).
In addition to the project the student may engage in any other management activities deemed appropriate by the preceptor, e.g., attending staff meetings, solving other problems, writing position papers, etc. The performance of these activities, however, will not substitute for the project analysis and report.
The student registers for PHC 6945 (3 hours) and PHC 6977 (3 hours) in consultation with the academic advisor.
