This course addresses important infectious diseases which are either newly emergent (e.g. West Nile and SARS), or are re-emerging in various parts of the world after a period of relative retreat (e.g. dengue). Some of the diseases occur in areas relatively remote from the United States (e.g filariasis) to be termed "exotic", whereas some, such as the new strains of antibiotic resistant bacteria are becoming commonplace in the U.S. Various prominent experts are invited to present the lectures, which will be in a seminar format.
