Objectives

The work proposed to start developing a foundation for such culture of mitigation through education by working with K-12 schools.

The main objective of this project is to create a program for teachers to facilitate the inclusion of relevant content within lesson plans, within existing curricula, and for the hosting of school-wide events to promote awareness to the need for mitigating disasters. The program provides for outreach activities to promote parental involvement.

Another important objective of the proposed project if to acquire important feedback from teachers and students involved in reviewing, delivering and studying the content developed by the research team. Such feedback is crucial to determine the effectiveness of both the actual content and the delivery method utilized.

The ultimate objective of this project is to create a pilot version of an educational product that may be adopted for system-wide delivery both in Florida and other states as well as in other countries that share our vulnerability to hurricanes and other natural hazards.
