  • Dr. Mary Evans was appointed as a reviewer for the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices
  • Lois Gonzalez, PhD, ARNP, BC was awarded $9,645 by the College of Nursing to conduct her study, The Efficacy of Reiki in Children’s Pain Management.
  • Three USF Nursing DNP students, Carla Nye, Barbara Little, and Beth Murphy, have been selected as doctoral scholars for the 2006 NLN Education Summit.  This year, the annual NLN Education Summit will be in New York City at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square Wednesday, September 27 – Saturday, September 30, 2006. There were applications received from all over the country for only 25 spots.
  • Fred Slone, MD was informed  that his abstract entitled Basic and Advanced Disaster Preparedness Training for Nursing and Medical Students was selected for oral presentation during the American Public Health Association (APHA) 134th  Annual Meeting  & Exposition (November 4-8, 2006) in Boston, MA.
  • Dr. Maureen Groer was notified that her article, The Controversy about what Constitutes a Safe and Nurturant Infant Sleep Environment was published with K. Morgan and L. Smith in the Journal of Obstetrical, Gynecological and Neonatal Nursing (JOGNN).
  • Dr. Janie Canty-Mitchell was informed that her abstract, Strategies to reduce child and adolescent health disparities through community partnerships has been selected for Oral presentation during the 134th  Annual Meeting  & Exposition (November 4-8, 2006) in Boston, MA.
  • Dr. Cecilia Jevitt attended the 51st annual meeting of the American College of Nurse-Midwives  to give three presentations:
The National Practitioner Data Bank: Nurse-Midwifery Data from 1990 to 2005;
Transfer of Care: Liability Issues in Midwifery Practice; and
Shoulder Dystocia.
Dr. Jevitt also chaired the annual meeting of the ACNM Professional Liability Section and will remain the Section Chair another year.
  • December 2005 graduate (MS Nursing Informatics), Gina DeFlippo, under the mentorship of Dr. Elaine Slocumb, has learned that her Fall 2005 Capstone manuscript, "Rogers' Innovation-Diffusion Theory: Guide to Implementation of Clinical Information Systems", has been accepted for publication by the journal CIN: Computers, Information, Nursing.
  • Nursing student, Cynthia McNeave, under the mentorship of Dr. Elaine Slocumb, has learned that her Spring 2006 Capstone manuscript, Upper Extremity Venous Thrombosis - Effort Thrombosis, has been accepted for publication by the journal The Nurse Practitioner
  • DNP Student and faculty member at Manatee Community College, Ruth Anderson, under the mentorship of Dr. Elaine Slocumb, has learned that her Spring 2006 Capstone manuscript, "Individualized Student Advisement for NCLEX-RN Preparation: A Community College Experience", has been accepted for publication by the journal Nurse Educator. 
  • Dr. Cecile Lengacher was informed that her article, Humor and Laughter May Influence Health: II. Complementary Therapies and Humor in a Clinical Population, was published in the journal eCAM 2006; 3(2)187-190.
  • Dr. Mary Evans was informed that her abstract, Conflict and Conflict Resolution in Systems of Care, has been selected for oral presentation during the 134th Annual Meeting & Exposition of the American Public Health Association, November 4-8, 2006 in Boston, MA.
  • Dr. Sandra Cadena lead an international nursing clinical experience in Panama City with 13 undergraduate nursing students who completed their community clinical rotation working with nursing students from the Universidad de Panama during a 3 week collaborative experience. USF Nursing was presented to the President of the University of Panama and all of the Deans from the various Colleges and Departments. The group was also introduced to the Panama Minister of Health while Michael Leavitt, the US Secretary of Health and Human Services, also visited Panama.
  • Dr. Janie Canty-Mitchell was invited to present on the HIV/AIDS pandemic at the 11th Diakonia of the Americas and Caribbean (DOTAC) Conference to be held in Trinidad, West Indies on July 1 through 7, 2006. DOTAC meets every four years and includes members from Canada, the United States, West Indies, and Brazil. The HIV/AIDS pandemic is of particular importance to the member groups. DOTAC will pay for all travel expenses.
  • Dr. Maureen Groer was notified that her article, Cytokines, Infections, Stress, and Dysphoric Moods in Breast and Formula feeders, was published with M. Davis in the Journal of Obstetrical, Gynecological and Neonatal Nursing (JOGNN).
  • Nursing Faculty, Deborah Cantero, PhD(c), ARNP-C, Director of Clinical Nurse Leader MSN Program has been invited to speak on Leading Evidence Based Practice: The Role of the Clinical Nurse Leader at the Culture Changes within Nursing conference at Sarasota Memorial Hospital on Sept. 15, 2006. 
  • Dr. Versie Johnson-Mallard was notified that her article, “Postpartum Mothers’ Disclosure of Abuse, Role, and Conflict”, was published in the journal, Health Care for Women International 27: 324-343, 2006.
  • Doctoral student, Doreen Wagner, was notified that her articles were accepted for publication:
Wagner, V.D. (2006). Unplanned perioperative hypothermia and surgical complications:  Evidence for prevention.  To be published in Perioperative Nursing Clinics in October.

Wagner, V.D., Byrne, M., & Kolcaba, K. (2006). Effects of comfort warming in preoperative patients. To be published in the Association of  periOperative Registered Nurses AORN Journal in September.
  • Dr. Mary Evans was appointed to the Board of the Center for Health and Human Services at Beacon College in Leesburg, Florida
  • Dr. Candace Burns has been selected to Chair the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Educational and Research Centers Occupational Health Nursing Director’s meeting in 2007.
  • Dr. Mary Webb presented Stress in African American Women: Clinical Implications at the Lifestyle Modification Workshop for the International Society of Hypertension in Blacks annual conference held in Atlanta June 23-26th.
  • Dr. Cecile Lengacher was notified that the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science Program Committee for the 2006 National State of the Science Congress in Nursing Research that her abstract: Symptoms, Control and Immune Responses to Relaxation-Guided Imagery in Breast Cancer Patients was accepted for presentation.  The Congress is being held in Washington, D.C. at the Omni Shoreham Hotel from October 12-14, 2006.
  • Doctoral student, Sabrina Robinson, was notified that her abstract, in collaboration with Marilyn Williams, BA, MS, was selected for poster presentation at the American Public Health Association (APHA) national conference on 11/6/06. The abstract title is: Evaluation of Missing Persons in Nursing: Disparity of Racial and Ethnic Minority Registered Nurses in the United States.
