Project World Health is a unique program developed
by the Family Practice Student Organization at the University
of South Florida College of Medicine. The program involves medical
students in international medical issues through service and education
promoting awareness of other medical systems and health issues
of other countries.
Founded as the brainchild of Sigrid Johnson in
the late eighties, Project World Health is a student-run program,
with year-round participation in brown bag lunches, evening seminars,
and medical missions to different countries each year. Opportunities
to travel are offered through affiliations with other service
organizations and our own exchange program. Project World Health
also aids students wishing to practice medicine in underdeveloped
or foreign countries in the future.

Medical missions led during the
spring form the basis of year long preparation. Prior to a
mission, students research and are briefed on the history,
culture, language and cultural sensitivities of their target
region. Focus teams recruit medical professionals, supplies
and financial donations to make it all happen. Once in the
country, students travel to both urban and rural areas to
understand the differing forms of care available. During their
tour, students deliver their supplies and work with physicians
and other senior medical students. |
