Admission Requirements
College of Medicine · Ph.D. Program

Students who seek admission to a graduate degree program as first-time or transfer graduate students are required to meet minimum State University System (SUS) requirements. However, meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission to any particular program. Some programs may admit only a limited number of students, or do not have the faculty or facilities to accommodate a student’s particular area of study. Consequently, many applicants who exceed minimum requirements may not be accepted.

In order to be considered for admission, first-time or transferring graduate applicants must have:

1.      A bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a regionally accredited university

2.      Minimum overall grade-point average of 3.0 out of a possible 4.0 with a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 in the sciences*

3.      Graduate Record Examination score of 1100 or higher*

4.      Completed pre-requisites in:

a)     General biology (1 year)

b)     General chemistry (1 year)

c)     General physics (1 year)

d)     Organic chemistry (1 year)

e)     Quantitative analysis (1 course)

f)       Mathematics including integral and differential calculus

*        Special considerations may be made for students who have earned a graduate degree in a natural science from a regionally accredited institution.

In addition to course requirements summarized above, the department of the chosen discipline of major study may require additional course work to be completed before admission into the Graduate Program, (these requirements are detailed in the individual departmental links). Specific deficiencies may be corrected through courses taken within a specified period of time at the discretion of the faculty department of major. Each course taken, as well as the acceptable grade, is to be agreed upon by the student and the major department at the time the student is accepted into the Graduate Program. This information will be communicated to the student and to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Affairs (College of Medicine) prior to registration for the first term.

Except for State and University minimum admission criteria, all other requirements herein summarized (Sections 2-5) may under exceptional circumstances be waived in consideration of the applicant's expected success in the program with the recommendation of the faculty of the major department and with the approval of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Affairs.
