Fellowship Programs
The Department of Neurological Surgery currently supports three clinical fellowship programs:
Skull Base/Vascular Neurosurgery
The University of South Florida Department of Neurological Surgery, Division of Vascular and Skull Base Surgery supports a fully funded two year fellowship in Skull Base/Vascular Neurosurgery. The chosen fellow is seen as an integral part of the multidisciplinary Center for Vascular and Skull Base Surgery which includes Interventional Neuroradiologists, Otolaryngologists, Neurointensivists, as well as members of our division. The fellow is involved in all aspects of care including preoperative evaluation, nonoperative management, operative planning and execution, as well as postoperative care and follow up. USF is a regional referral center for complex skull base and vascular conditions; over 200 aneurysms are treated annually using a variety of approaches. During this fellowship the fellow will be exposed to and gain skill with a multitude of skull base approaches as well as complex aneurysm reconstruction and bypass techniques. During this time the fellow will also spend time in the Osman Microanatomy Laboratory, not only for research but to improve his/her microvascular technique. They will also be expected to assist with the annual Masters in Skull Base Symposium held at USF.

Spinal Surgery
The Division of Spine, under the direction of Dr. Fernando L. Vale, sponsors a fully funded one year fellowship in complex spinal disorders. During this year the fellow will gain exposure and familiarity with a variety of approaches and techniques involving the entire spinal axis from the occiput to the sacrum addressing the entire constellation of disease states than affect the human spine; from trauma to degenerative and congenital disease, to oncological and infectious problems. Minimally invasive surgery is a significant component of the surgery performed in the division when appropriate.

Surgical Neuro-Oncology
The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, the only Comprehensive Cancer Center in the State of Florida and a major affiliate of the University of South Florida (USF) College of Medicine, sponsors a fully funded combined clinical/research fellowship in Neurosurgical Oncology. This fellowship will involve exposure to a broad spectrum of brain, skull base, and spinal tumors as well as didactic instruction in Neuro-Oncology and Radiosurgery. Opportunities in basic and clinical research are available.
The Neuro-Oncology Program consists of three full time neurosurgeons and two full time neuro-oncologists. Over 600 major procedures were performed last year including 100 spinal and skull bases tumors and over 100 stereotactic radiosurgery procedures.
