Applicant Requirements
Applicants are encouraged to apply early and complete applications as soon as possible. We will begin to interview applicants with completed files in late September. Since we operate on a weekly "rolling admissions" environment our Admissions Committee may vote to admit highly qualified applicants in such a way that the class could be filled earlier than the final application deadline. Once the class is filled, interviewed applicants will be able to enter the class via the wait list process.
Students applying for admission to the USF College of Medicine MD Program must complete the requirements for a bachelor's degree at an accredited university or college by the time of matriculation. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of personal attributes and achievements, academic record, performance on the MCAT, personal references, interviews, their demonstrated motivation for medicine and helping others, as well as their ability to diversify the class and add to the diversity of the educational experience of their classmates. These motivations are mainly demonstrated by a consistent history of medical and community service volunteering, some physician shadowing, teamwork, leadership, and basic science-related research. Applicants who are currently pursuing graduate level work toward a Ph.D. degree or other professional degree are obligated to complete all degree requirements prior to matriculation into the MD Program.
Applicants who do not have or are not enrolled in a graduate program, must have both an undergraduate science (BCPM) GPA and AND overall GPA of no less than a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and a minimum MCAT score of 24 (USF does not average sections from multiple MCAT tests). Applicants with an undergraduate grade point average less than a 3.0 in either the science (BCPM-Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math) or overall will not be considered. Over the last three years, the GPA and MCAT average score is 3.65 (BCPM), 3.70 (overall), and 30, respectively.
The College of Medicine is committed to the principle of a diverse classroom. According to the AAMC our program is in the top 25% of medical schools in the nation for ethnic and racial diversity. Our students exemplify diversity through their different educational backgrounds, amazing life experiences, and personal histories
You must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien (PRA) with a Green Card in your possession before we will consider your application for a possible interview. Applicants should clearly indicate their state of residency. The MD Program is state-supported and a vast majority of our matriculating class are Florida residents. But since the entering class of 2004, a growing number of non-Florida residents have matriculated into this program.
A Florida resident, for purposes of admission, lower tuition, and other university classification needs, is one whose parents or guardian (if the applicant is dependent) or the applicant (if independent) is a citizen of the U.S. or a PRA, and has established legal residence and resided permanently in Florida for at least 12 months preceding registration at the university. The owning of property in Florida, while being physically located in another state, does not qualify a person to claim Florida residence. In those instances where residency is in question, an applicant is requested to submit a Declaration of Domicile one year in advance of matriculation for tuition purposes. Please visit http://www.registrar.usf.edu/Residency/Definitions.php for additional residency requirement information.
Interview invitations for all applicants are at the discretion of the Medical Student Selection Committee. An invitation to interview means only that the initial evaluation is sufficient to warrant further consideration by the committee. Upon receiving an acceptance, the applicant is emailed a form that must be signed within two weeks acknowledging the intent to attend. If an accepted applicant is later offered a position by another medical program, the applicant is obligated to notify each program of their intent to attend/withdraw as rapidly as possible. Any offer of acceptance is provisional pending the satisfactory completion of all requirements and conditions of admission. An acceptance offer may be canceled failing to meet requirements or failure to maintain high scholastic standards.
Applicants who have questions concerning their credentials are urged to contact the Office of Admissions via email at md-admissions@health.usf.edu or via telephone at 813-974-2229, option 1.
