Joy McCann Culverhouse Center for Esophageal & Swallowing Disorders
USF Health · College of Medicine

Welcome

The Center is located within the University of South Florida Medical Clinic building and offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of swallowing disorders.  Our health care team is dedicated to providing the most accurate diagnosis, medical advice and/or treatment for swallowing problems.  Our Center physician consultants are gastroenterologists who specialize in disorders of swallowing and esophageal diseases (esophagology).  Our professional staff also includes a full-time Speech Pathologist who specializes in evaluation and treatment of oropharyngeal swallowing disorders. She is also a Board Recognized Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders.

Our staff includes a Patient Care Coordinator, a Registered Nurse, a Licensed Practical Nurse, an Office Manager, an Appointment Secretary and a Research Assistant.

Our Swallowing Center is oriented to manage difficult, complex or unusual swallowing disorders on a consultative basis such as: achalasia, Barrett esophagus, complex esophageal strictures, esophageal cancer, hypopharyngeal strictures, strokes and other muscle and nerve disorders that interfere with normal swallowing.  The highly specialized technique of pharyngoesophageal lumen restoration has been performed for over a decade by our staff.

Some of the special diagnostic tests provided by the Center include: endoscopic ultrasonography, 24-hour pH testing, esophageal manometry, and the new technique of manofluoroscopy (simultaneous observation of pressure tracing and barium swallow study.)

Consultative services are also provided as needed to patients with swallowing disorders by: radiology, neurology, otolaryngology (ear, nose & throat), and swallowing rehabilitation.

For patients who may need assistance with long-distance travel to our Center, please refer to the links section on the left menu.
