       July 2008

       Dear Colleagues,

We had a very successful match and are also welcoming our new fellows aboard who started July 1. This unique group of incredibly talented clinicians and researchers each brings a different perspective and an enthusiastic attitude towards medicine. Their backgrounds are global reaching from Sudan to Vietnam to Iran to Pakistan to India and even one from the remote island of Puerto Rico. We can now truly claim to be the Division of Infectious disease and International medicine. Please join me in welcoming our new fellows:

Dr. Fariba Donovan (who started in March '08), Dr. Aliyah Baluch, Dr. Tran Phung, Dr. Sally Alrabaa, Dr. Danashree Kelkar, and Dr. Marela Velez.

Research: Our work at the Hillsborough Health Department is the basis for evidence-based practice. We are developing new knowledge with each patient. Research is actually relatively new to Tampa Bay but is becoming part of our DNA. Please see yourself as a researcher as well as a clinician. Who else do you know that is developing the evidence for evidence-based medicine? Please remember how vital our research projects are to our patients and be sure to always consider who would be best suited for inclusion.

All clinical faculty and fellows, please register on www.FLHIVResearch.com to receive automatic updates on HIV studies available for enrollment. Registration takes less than two minutes. This is a new registration system created to provide benefit to our volunteers as well as to our healthcare professionals.

International Programs: Our international component has made a substantial impact campus wide. Most recently, Dr. Menezes has been named Director of International Programs for the College of Medicine and Dr. Jen Logan has been named Associate Director. Please congratulate them.

        Academic Excellence:

        • Dr. Richard Oehler's article: Using Smartphones in Clinical Practice, published in Clinical Infectious Diseases, is available electronically for your perusal.
        • I recently participated in the ISID conference in Malaysia, where I presented the abstract, "Antibiotic Protocol for Complex Spinal Surgery: Impact of a Protocol Change at a Children's Hospital."
        • An article authored by Dr. Jennifer Logan, Dr. Lynette Menezes, Dr. Yiliang Zhu, Karina D'Souza, MPH et. al. entitled, "Profile and Trends of HIV-Infected Patients who use Health Department Services in Hillsborough County" was published in Florida Public Health Review.

Finally, I would like to direct the new fellows to our ID Resource Library, which contains over 80 powerpoints. Access these resources with your HSCNet ID through the Faculty/Fellows Login on our website homepage. If you would like to share any of your lectures or need any help downloading them please contact our website administrator, Julian Corvin, juliancorvin@gmail.com.
