During the first year of fellowship, a program of formal didactics and conferences complements experiences in clinical care. The overall curriculum provides fellows with knowledge and skills to care for older patients. Specifically, the curriculum is enriched with training in evidence-based medicine, clinical teaching skills, and interdisciplinary team care.
The Core Curriculum
- Series of lectures given for the geriatrics and geriatric pharmacy fellows covering common topics in geriatrics and gerontology.
- Intended to prepare fellows for management of commonly encountered issues and conditions.
- Held at the James A. Haley VA and the University of South Florida and given by the faculty within the Division of Geriatrics.
- Examples of topics: palliative care, pain management, gait assessment, and the management of delirium and wounds.

EBM in Geriatrics
- Series of interactive presentations on the practice of Evidence Based Medicine in geriatrics.
- Presentations by division faculty on formulating questions, searching the literature, basic clinical epidemiology, and critical appraisal of a variety of articles.
- Special emphasis is placed on methodological challenges encountered in the care of older adults by interdisciplinary teams.
- Fellows utilize skills promoted in the course during the Academic Geriatrics Rotation.
