James A. Haley V.A. Nursing Home and The Baldomero Lopez State Nursing Home

The James A. Haley VA Medical Center is a 327 bed tertiary care teaching hospital, with 300 authorized nursing home care beds (180 in Tampa, and 120 beds in Orlando) and is dedicated to providing the highest quality of patient care and services to veterans in Central Florida. The full range of inpatient and outpatient care is provided including Medicine (111 beds), Surgical (61 beds), Psychiatry (50 beds), Neurology (7 beds), as well as a 60-bed Spinal Cord Injury Service, and a 42 bed Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center.

The Baldomero Lopez Veterans' Nursing Home in Land O' Lakes (Pasco County) is a 120-bed facility providing skilled care for its residents, including those with Alzheimers' disease.

  • Fellows attend bi-weekly Interdisciplinary care conferences to discuss care plans.
  • The interdisciplinary team includes nurse practitioners,
    social workers, nurses, dieticians, psychologists, dentists, pharmacists, chaplains, therapists (OT, PT, RT).

Continuity Experiences in Long Term Care

Canterbury Towers

Canterbury Towers is a Continuing Care Retirement Community located 12.5 miles from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. 

  • Fellows assigned to Canterbury Towers follow a cohort of patients in the skilled nursing facility during the duration of their fellowship.
  • Formal multidisciplinary teaching rounds occur with the Medical Director twice monthly, allowing trainees to experience multiple facets of nursing home medicine.
  • Special project opportunities are available to those with special interest in nursing home medicine.

Lakeshore Villas Retirement Center

Lakeshore Villas is a continuing care retirement community roughly 10 minutes from the University of South Florida College of Medicine.

  • First year fellows assigned to the Forest follow a cadre of patients in the long-term care section under the supervision of Dr. Monina Mabuti and nurse practitioner, Valerie Morales.
