2013 Scholarly Concentrations Program Summer Stipend Opportunities for MSI Students
USF Health Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM) students are able to participate in scholarly projects supported by the Scholarly Concentrations Program through the Office of Educational Affairs. For a period of seven weeks starting In May, eligible students will work with MCOM faculty and affiliate hospitals on their scholarly projects.

2013 Arnold P. Gold Foundation
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is excited to announce the launch of their 2013 Student Summer Fellowship (SSF) program. SSF grants are awarded for research and/or service in community health and cultural competency. The Foundation's goal is to provide an opportunity for students to work directly with patients and to become more compassionate, relationship-centered physicians.
This year they increased the maximum award to $4,000 for a ten-week project. If interested, a shorter time frame is acceptable. Any stipend would be prorated to length of time on the project. 2013 Student Alumni Ambassador
The student alumni ambassador is a paid summer program for 7 weeks starting in May 2013 offered exclusively to MSI students with the goal of engaging MD alumni and securing current contact information.
This position is a 40-hour a week appointment where the student alumni ambassador aids the USF Health alumni relations office in the completion of key tasks essential to the growth of the alumni program. The student alumni ambassador contacts alumni by telephone and email to inform them of upcoming MCOM alumni events and to secure current and complete contact information. Research through the use of internet tools may be required to locate email addresses and telephone numbers. The focus is on alumni invited to the 2013 Reunion. Student alumni ambassadors also spend four or more hours a week shadowing an alumnus. Initial appointments will be in place and subsequent appointments are secured by the student alumni ambassador during the telephone and email contacts. Weekly reports are required to document contact with alumni and changes to contact information. Flexible schedules are required since the shadowing appointments are based on the physician’s schedules and calling may be required at night or during the weekend. A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is required. An end of experience summary report is to be completed by the student and is due by August 15th, 2013.

A letter of reference from a faculty member and your CV must also accompany this document. The date for submission is April 2nd by 5pm. The Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) Program
The program was developed to encourage medical students - particularly budding researchers - to consider a career in academic geriatrics. The MSTAR program provides medical students with an enriching experience in aging-related research and geriatrics, under the mentorship of top experts in the field. 2012-2013 NEW HHMI-K-RITH Research Opportunities for Medical Students in South Africa
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV (K-RITH) are pleased to announce a partnership to fund medical students for a year of basic research through HHMI’s Medical Research Fellows Program. The new partnership presents a unique opportunity for students to conduct research in tuberculosis (TB) and HIV at K-RITH, a new cutting-edge research institute in Durban, South Africa.
The year-long fellowships will begin in the summer of 2013 and are open to students currently enrolled in US medical schools. Students should have previous research experience and a strong interest in infectious disease. MD/PhD students are not eligible to apply. NOTE: the application deadline for the 2013-2014 academic year is January 11, 2013.
The HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program enables medical students at schools located in the U.S. to spend a year conducting basic, translational, or applied biomedical research. HHMI and its partner organizations will award up to 77 fellowships for 2013-2014. Fellows will receive a stipend of $29,000, and allowances totaling an additional $11,000.

2013 Scaife Family Foundation Medical Student Fellowship Program
Rutgers University, Center of Alcohol Studies, is now accepting applications for the Scaife Family Foundation Medical Student Fellowship Program for the 2013 Institute of Addiction Studies.
Medical students interested in the field of addictions are encouraged to explore the Institute of Addiction Studies through the Medical Student Fellowship Program. This one week program, made possible by the Scaife Family Foundation, includes a four-hour per day course designed for future physicians and up to 20 hours of additional education through lectures and workshops of the students choosing.
The Scaife Family Foundation Fellowships cover tuition, room and meals, and a $400 stipend to assist with travel and miscellaneous expenses. The GE Foundation and National Medical Fellowships (NMF) are pleased to open the Primary Care Leadership Program (PCLP) online application to 2013 prospective scholars! The program provides future primary care health professionals a valuable opportunity to examine the challenges and rewards of primary care practice in community health centers (CHCs) across the United States. GE-NMF PCLP enhances traditional clinical externships with leadership training and network building. The overall mission of the program is to develop a pipeline of future primary care professionals and to build capacity at CHCs.
In 2013, PCLP offers students a service-learning opportunity at CHCs in Los Angeles CA, Phoenix AZ, Nashville TN, Jackson MS, Mobile AL, W. Memphis AR/Memphis TN, Orlando FL, or San Antonio TX. (Please note that program cities are subject to change based on site partner availability.)
PCLP scholars are required to complete 200 service hours within a 6 to 8 week period. Participants will be actively engaged in healthcare services, leadership training, and institutional project activities relevant to both academic programs and host sites, and will interact with a network of organizations and individuals from academic institutions, NMF alumni, and program advisors.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria:

AAP Summer Medical Student Programs Now Accepting Applications
The Association of Academic Physiatrists is seeking medical students from all American allopathic or osteopathic medical schools to apply for AAP PM&R Summer Externships, Rehabilitation Research Experience for Medical Students (RREMS) and Medical Student Summer Clinical Externship (MSSCE).
Deadline to apply is April 12, 2013.
RREMS and MSSCE are eight-week summer externships offered to medical students between the first and second year of medical school with an attached stipend of $4,000. Each student is expected to submit a research study (RREMS participants) or a case report (MSSCE participants) for presentation at the AAP Annual Meeting. The contribution by the hosting PM&R Department would be to agree to support the travel and registration of the trainee to the AAP Annual Meeting to allow students to present their work, observe scientific paper presentations, network with residents and leaders in the field of PM&R, and to meet additional mentors.

Margaret E. Mahoney Fellowship Program
The Margaret E. Mahoney Fellowship Program is accepting applications through April 12, 2013.
Margaret E. Mahoney was a distinguished Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and a member of NYAM’s Board of Trustees from 1991-1999. She was president of The Commonwealth Fund from 1980 to 1995, and a pioneer in the establishment of health care philanthropy. Throughout her distinguished career, Margaret was passionately committed to addressing the health care and developmental needs of vulnerable populations, especially children.
To honor the legacy of Margaret E. Mahoney, and her commitment to improving health care for vulnerable populations, The Commonwealth Fund, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation, The New York Academy of Medicine, and other founding donors announce the creation of a new fellowship program for health professional students, focused on transforming health care delivery systems for vulnerable populations and early childhood development and prevention. The program will be guided by a distinguished National Advisory Committee still in formation including: Drew Altman, Robert Brook, Joseph Califano, John Craig, Karen Davis, Harvey Fineberg, Karen Hein, Phil Lee, David Satcher, Donna Shalala, Gail Warden, and Tim Wirth. They are committed to ensuring an enriched leadership development experience for the Fellows through their personal involvement and that of their colleagues.
The Margaret E. Mahoney Fellowships will provide stipends to support outstanding medical, dental, nursing, public health and public policy students wishing to participate in 8-10 week research and action programs and policy projects addressing the health needs of vulnerable urban populations. Student projects will focus on transforming health care delivery systems and improving access to high-quality, cost-effective care, including preventive services, for low-income, uninsured, and minority urban populations, and/or early childhood health and development. The Fellowship program will also include several leadership sessions throughout the Fellowship period. Fellows will participate in a culminating event at which they will provide an oral presentation of their project, and will also be required to submit a written report within three months after the Fellowship period. On successfully completing the Fellowship, the students will join a Margaret Mahoney Fellows Alumni Association and will continue to be offered unique opportunities for career development.
There will be an initial cohort of 5-7 Fellows with a planned increase to 10 Fellows per year as funding permits. Students will receive a stipend of $4,500 and a travel allowance of $500.
Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants must be students currently enrolled in medical, dental, nursing, public health, or public policy schools in the United States; must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident, or authorized to work in the U.S. throughout the award period. Projects must be conducted over an 8-10 week period between June 1 and September 1 during the application year and must be conducted with or supervised by a senior professional mentor in an academic, government, or non-profit institution in the Greater New York/New Jersey area. The program will develop sites for these experiences and match them with selected applicants or applicants may propose their own mentors and projects during the application process (see below).

a) If you wish the program directors to match you to Fellowship sites arranged by the program, please provide a clear description of your specific goals for the Fellowship, the content areas and types of experiences within the purposes of the Fellowship that are of particular interest to you and the type of organization in which you would prefer to have a working experience.
b) If you are proposing your own Fellowship placement site and mentor, please provide the name of the organization and the mentor with whom you will be working and describe your proposed activities, the expected product, and how they link to the purposes of the Mahoney Fellowship.
If you are proposing your own Fellowship placement, please provide a signed letter of recommendation from the individual faculty or staff member who will serve as your mentor from the institution in which your project will take place describing the specific project and your role in it; how it links with the goals of the Mahoney Fellowship; the facilities and staff resources available for the proposed project; their expectations for how the experience will contribute to your career interests; and affirming that he or she has evaluated and approved your proposed application.
4) A signed letter of recommendation from a senior faculty member at your school affirming that you are a student in good standing and addressing their assessment of your suitability for this kind of Fellowship experience and how they see it contributing to your career development.

2011 AHEC Interdiciplinary Community Health Scholars Summer Program
AHEC Interdisciplinary Community Health Scholars are health professions students interested in working with rural and medically underserved populations. They use the training and skill sets of their respective disciplines to create unique, comprehensive solutions to health disparities impacting local communities
Fourteen scholars will spend 8 weeks of their summer working part time in teams to develop and implement projects that have a direct impact on the health status of medically underserved communities. Scholars will work together in interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement community-based tobacco projects in rural or urban underserved communities. The time commitment is 8 hours per day, three days per week for 8 weeks.
During Summer 2011, AHEC ICHS teams will work either at Gulfcoast North AHEC in Land O' Lakes (serving Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties) or Gulfcoast South AHEC in Sarasota (serving Charlotte, DeSoto, Sarasota and Manatee counties). Students may apply to only one program.

Health professions students from a variety of primary care and allied health disciplines are invited to apply:
