7 Year Honors Program
The USF Honors College Accelerated Medical School Program Eligible USF freshmen who have been admitted to The Honors College and are interested in attending medical school have an opportunity to receive guaranteed admission to USF’s College of Medicine and complete a medical degree in seven years, provided that the student continues to meet all the requirements of the program. The first three years of study will be done at the USF Honors College and the fourth year will be done at USF College of Medicine as part of the first year of medical school. A Bachelor’s Degree will be conferred following successful completion of the Honors College requirements (typically after the fourth year of study). The Doctor of Medicine Degree will be conferred after the successful completion of the program. We have also developed 7 Year programs with Florida International University, University of Central Florida, Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida Southern College, Stetson University and University of West Florida.

MD/MBA Program

The USF College of Medicine, together with the USF College of Business Administration, now offers a five-year program leading to dual degrees – the MD and the MBA.

Features of the program are as follows:

Admission:  Students need only apply to the College of Medicine and indicate their interest in pursuing the joint MD/MBA Program.  Admission to the College of Medicine guarantees admission to the MBA Program in the College of Business Administration.  No additional admission tests are required.  [It will, however, be necessary for the admitted student to subsequently also complete a USF Graduate School Application and submit an application fee of $30, and to grant permission for the Medical School to release the student’s transcripts and test scores.]

Fees:  Students in the MD/MBA program pay College of Business Administration fees for the first year of the program.  For the remaining four years, College of Medicine tuition and fees are applicable.  [Fees are subject to annual increases as of July 1st of each year.]  Financial Aid is available through the Financial Aid offices of the University and the College of Medicine.

Structure of the Program.

Year 1: Students spend their first year taking MBA classes.  Typically, the student will complete 40-41 credits during that year by taking 15-16 credits of course work during each of the fall and spring semesters, and 9 credits during the summer session.  The College of Business Administration will provide an advisor to help the student design an individualized program of study with appropriate elective classes.

Years 2-4:  During years 2-4, students take the first three years of classes in the College of Medicine.  During this period, students will have the opportunity to mentor MD/MBA students entering the program during those years, and will earn 3 credits for this mentoring activity.  Students will now have the choice of two optional “tracks” -- a research track and a managerial track.  (See boxed information, following page.)

Year 5:  Research track students will complete their projects during year 5, and Managerial Track students will complete the two-course Integrated Business Analysis sequence during year 5.  In addition, all MD/MBA students must select and complete, as one of their College of Medicine electives, the 6-credit Managed Care course.  Credit for this course will apply to both the MD and the MBA programs.

By the end of year 5, students will have completed all College of Medicine requirements for the MD degree, and the full 56 credits required for the MBA degree.  Both degrees will be awarded at this time.

RESEARCH TRACK

During year 2, and in consultation with a faculty advisor in both the College of Business Administration and the College of Medicine, the student identifies and develops the preliminary structure for an ongoing cross-discipline research project that will culminate in a thesis/publish-able research article written in year 5. The student earns 6 credits for this project.

MANAGERIAL TRACK

During year 5 (fall and spring semester), students take the two-semester course sequence Integrated Business Applications (IBA) I and II. These are the capstone courses of the MBA program in which students work in teams on a real company project. During IBA I, they design a marketing and strategic plan for the company, and in IBA II, they do a detailed financial analysis and develop a financial plan for the com-pany. The student earns 3 credits in each IBA class, for a total of 6 credits.

Withdrawal/Dismissal from programs.

Students are expected to earn satisfactory grades in both colleges.  Should a student withdraw from (or be dismissed from) the College of Medicine during this program, credits successfully earned in the MBA program remain a part of the student’s College of Business Administration record, and it may still be possible to earn the MBA degree by completing the remaining requirements within the College of Business Administration.

If a student withdraws from the College of Business Administration during this program, courses successfully completed remain a part of his/her permanent record, and the student, if in good standing, may subsequently re-enroll at a later date to complete the MBA degree, subject to university time limitations.

In the case of withdrawal in good standing from the College of Business Administration, the student will be eligible to enter the following year’s medical class, on the approval of the COM Admissions Committee. If the student is dismissed from the College of Business Administration or withdrawals failing, the student will be subject to loss of eligibility for enrollment at the COM at the discretion of the COM Admissions committee.

MD/MPH Program

A dual (5 year) program has been developed for selected medical students to extend their undergraduate medical education program by one year in order to obtain the MPH degree in addition to the MD degree. Students in good academic standing will complete the medical curriculum through the second elective period of the 4th year; then be enrolled in the COPH program fall, spring and summer semesters while maintaining clinical skills; and then return for elective periods 3-11 of the 4th COM program.

The student will apply to the program during the winter of the third year of medical school.  The College of Public Health accepts the MCAT scores, so the GRE will not be required.

After completing the third year, the following table indicates proposed use of elective “time slots”:

*All students will participate in a designated continuity clinic one-half day per week during the fall and spring terms.  This clinic experience will count as one elective in both the MD and the MPH programs. Depending on the concentration program at the COPH, students may be required to take additional electives.  These electives will also serve as COM electives toward the senior year requirements.

There will be a series of electives noted in the COM elective manual as courses that will jointly meet COM and COPH requirements.  Several electives will be developed:

  • Applied biostatistics and evidence based medicine
  • Research methods
  • Clinical electives at health departments, etc.
  • Introduction to Public Health (for senior medical students NOT in the MD/MPH program)

Students graduating from the COM are required to complete all core requirements, including 4 months of required senior clerkships.  In addition, 5 other electives are required.  The continuity clinic serves as one of these electives.  The core courses of epidemiology and biostatistics, common to all of the MPH programs will count as one elective in the COM program. Therefore, 4 additional electives are required.   Thus, 7 required months (4 clerkship, 3 elective) will be taken during the 11 elective periods available.  Ample time will be available for preparation for the USMLE Step 2 exam and for residency interviewing. Additional electives may be taken if so desired. The Step 2 exam must be taken prior to beginning the Fall Term in the MPH program.

Concentrations
A number of concentration are available and  include: Epidemiology, Occupational health for Health Professionals, Health Care Organizations and Management, and Maternal and Child Health.

MD/PhD Program
Upon special application to the Dean and following demonstration of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values appropriate to the achieved level of training in the College of Medicine Curriculum, the Dean of the College of Medicine may approve an individualized program of study leading to the combined MD/PhD degree. Students may initiate such application by contacting the USF Office of Graduate Affairs.

Pre-Matriculation Program
Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to provide an environment which fosters academic success in the USF College of Medicine curriculum. This will be accomplished via assessment and application of the following skills:

a) Time management
b) Establishing interactive communication with faculty and peers
c) Identifying learning issues
d) Developing and verbalizing questions for discussion
e) Researching new information
f) Acquiring knowledge objectives
g) Reading comprehension
h) Test taking skills

This course has 2 essential components that are integrated and applied in a case-based, small group learning curriculum.

1) Case-Based Learning – Each week a patient oriented case will be presented to the student small groups. Students will be required to identify, research and share learning issues necessary to solve the case. The cases are designed to encompass information from all the basic science disciplines involved in the first 2 years of the medical school curriculum. At the conclusion of each case an exam will be given that reflects the style, format, and level of difficulty that can be anticipated in the first 2 academic years.

2) Skill Assessment and Development – Each student will be evaluated for learning style, reading skills, test taking skills, etc. Based on this assessment, an individualized plan will be developed to improve and enhance these essential learning skills. The application and practice of these skills will be integrated with the Case-Based Learning Component. Additional practice and improvement will be provided through laboratory exercises.
