SPTRS Faculty to Represent Florida at National Conference of Physical Therapists
Dr. Gina Maria Musolino, FL Chief Delegate and Drs. Rebecca Edgeworth and Steven Ambler, FL Delegates, shall be representing with the Florida Delegation for the 2013 House of Delegates, an APTA policy-making body, in Salt Lake City UT June 23-26, 2013. The decisions the delegates make have far-reaching implications for the association and the profession of physical therapy.
DPT Student Receives Golden Bull Award
Jillian Donohue, a 1st year DPT student in the Class of 2015, is a recipient of the Golden Bull Award -- one of USF's highest honors given annually to up to 20 students who encompass the spirit of USF and have demonstrated its values.As a Golden Bull recipient, Ms. Donohue embraces and epitomizes the institution of leadership, engagement with the community and public service, academic achievement through research, pursuit of knowledge and critical thinking skills, understanding of cultural and ethnic diversity, and a demonstrated commitment to respect, integrity, and civility. An award ceremony was held April 25, 2013 in the Marshall Center. The School of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Sciences congratulates Jillian on this fine honor.
Spring 2013 Graduates of the Transitional Doctorate of Physical Therapy (tDPT) Degree Program
Twenty nine graduates of the Transitional Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree program participated in the Spring 2013 USF commencement that took place on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Sun Dome on the Tampa campus.
SPTRS Professor Seok Hun Kim, PT, PhD to present at ICORR 2013
SPTRS Assistant Professor Seok Hun Kim, PT, PhD, is lead author of a paper titled “Robot-Assisted Balance Training for Gait Modification,” that has been selected for poster presentation at the 13th International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics in Seattle, Washington on June 24-26, 2013. In the paper, Dr. Kim identifies if a novel robot-assisted balance training program could change human gait patterns.
SPTRS Faculty to Present Poster at APTA 2013 Conference
SPTRS Assistant Professor Seok Hun Kim, PT, PhD has been accepted to present a poster at the 2013 conference of the American Physical Therapy Association in Salt Lake City, June 26-29. The poster, which was co-authored with Dr. Soonhee Kang and Miss Hye Yun Yang, is titled “Effects of a task-oriented training program on body function, activity, and participation in children with cerebral palsy.”
Abstract to be Presented at National Strength & Conditioning Conference
Dr. John Mayer, Lincoln Endowed Chair of Chiropractic & Biomechanical Research and Coordinator of Research for the SPTRS, along with co-authors Jennifer Libous, MS, SPTRS Clinical Research Administrator, and Jason Martuscello, MS, USF School of Physical Education and Exercise Science will have an abstract presented in the Scientific Program of the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s annual conference in Las Vegas, Nevada July 10-13, 2013. The abstract, titled "SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF CORE MUSCLE ACTIVITY DURING PHYSICAL FITNESS EXERCISES," will be presented by Mr. Martuscello.
Poster on Traumatic Brain Injury to be Presented
SPTRS Assistant Professor Naoki Tajiri, PT, PhD, along with William Quillen, PT, DPT, PhD, FACSM, Associate Dean and SPTRS Director and other co-authors, will have a poster presentation at the 20th Annual American Society for Neural Therapy and Repair Conference in Clearwater Beach, Florida on April 25-27. The poster, titled “Hyperbaric oxygen treatment and exercise attenuate behavioral and histological deficits in adult rats exposed to experimental traumatic brain injury,” represents a collaboration of USF’s Center of Excellence for Aging & Brain Repair, Department of Neurosurgery & Brain Repair, Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology, Office of Research and Innovation, and the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences. Co-authors include Dr. Cesar Borlongan; Dr. Raffaele Pilla; Dr. K Shinozuka; Dr. H Ishikawa; General Martin Steele, Ret.; Dr. Paul Sanberg; and Dr. Jay Dean.
The primary injury induced by traumatic brain injury (TBI) is largely unavoidable, but triggers secondary brain cell death that may be readily treatable. The poster focuses on this urgent health-related issue of high military significance that will have direct impact on treating soldiers at risk of presenting with TBI or have succumbed to TBI.
SPTRS Welcomes Dr. Naoki Tajiri
Dr. Naoki Tajiri joins the USF School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences as Assistant Professor and Research Scientist. Dr. Tajiri is not new to USF, as he has recently completed three years of post-doctoral training with Dr. Cesar Borlongan in the USF Center of Excellence for Aging and Brain Repair.
Clinically trained as a physical therapist in his home country of Japan, Dr. Tajiri’s expertise in STEM cell transplantation to ameliorate deficits from CNS stroke and tbi was developed during his graduate study at Okayama University. His recent post-doctoral work will provide SPTRS with a foothold in the rapidly emerging world of regenerative rehabilitation. He brings not only the required “cutting-edge” subject matter expertise to our School faculty, but a significant publication and grants record which will position him with medical and surgical colleagues in future research endeavors.
SPTRS Faculty to Present Poster at APTA 2013 Conference
Assistant Clinical Professors Dr. Matt Lazinski and Dr. Kyle Watterson have authored a poster that will be presented at the 2013 conference of the American Physical Therapy Association in Salt Lake City, June 26-29. The poster, which was co-authored with Don Smith of Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics, is titled “Rehabilitation of a Multi-structure Knee Injury in a Paralympian with Below the Knee Amputation: A Case Report.” The poster features the rehabilitation protocol utilized with a 27 year old Paralympics track athlete who sustained a traumatic knee dislocation.
DPT Student Selected as a Paul Ambrose Scholar
Claire Millman, a first year student in the DPT program, has been selected as a 2013 Paul Ambrose Scholar. She is one of only 40 health professions students from across the country who will attend the Paul Ambrose Scholars Program Symposium to be held June 20-23 in Washington, DC. Ms. Millman is in the DPT Class of 2015.
The symposium, sponsored by the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) and the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), is designed to empower students by enhancing their leadership skills and teaching them important public health competencies. Scholar students will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities and varying attitudes toward public health and learn methods to affect change in their own community.
SPTRS Faculty Recognized for Educational Excellence
Two SPTRS faculty members recently earned the College of Medicine’s Educational Excellence Awards, an honor presented to faculty by faculty. The winners are selected by an interdisciplinary and inter-professional selection committee that looks only at those faculty members who demonstrate innovative teaching and education scholarship.
Dr. Steven Ambler, Assistant Clinical Professor, and Dr. Rebecca Edgeworth, Clinical Instructor, will each be awarded the Deans Recognition of Outstanding Teaching at a ceremony on May 9, 2013 at the Hilton in downtown Tampa.
Dr. Ambler and Dr. Edgeworth are small group preceptors for 1st year DPT and MD students in “Doctoring,” an interprofessional course in the integrated Year 1 Curriculum of the USF Morsani College of Medicine. In addition, both faculty have teaching responsibilities with Physical Therapy courses and instruct DPT students in the USF PT Center clinical practice.

WORK: A Journal of Prevention, Assessment & Rehabilitation. The article “Age and Gender Normative Data for Lift Capacity” was co-authored by LN Matheson, JL Verna, S Leggett, and T Dreisinger and will appear in a future issue of the journal.
Faculty Member on Team to Receive Women's Health Seed Grant Award
SPTRS faculty member Jeannie Stephenson, PT, MS, NCS, has received a research grant as part of an interprofessional team at USF. Others on the team include Dr. Jamie Winderbaum Fernandez, (MCOM); Dr. Chuanhai Cao (College of Pharmacy); Dr. Kevin Kip, Professor (CON); and Dr. Cesar Borlongan (MCOM). Their research study entitled “Gender-linked stem cell alterations in stroke are magnified in postpartum depression: a target for neurorehabilitation,” was funded by USF Women’s Health for $11,200 for academic year 2013-2014. The intent of the grant is to develop faculty research collaboration across USF Health and other USF colleges on a subject related to Women’s Health.

Dr. L.L. “Dolly” Swisher, SPTRS Coordinator of Professional Education, has collaborated on an article with colleagues in the USF College of Nursing and from the School of Health Sciences (Physiotherapy) at the University of South Australia in Adelaide, Australia. Their manuscript, “Cognitive maps and the structure of observed learning outcome assessment of physiotherapy students’ ethical reasoning knowledge,” appears in the recent electronic version of the journal Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education. Lead author Mark Jones worked with Dr. Swisher, Ian Edwards, Gisela Van Kessel, and Jason Beckstead in writing the article.
Governor Scott Appoints SPTRS Director to Florida Board of Physical Therapy
Florida Governor Rick Scott has appointed William S. Quillen, PT, DPT, PhD, FACSM, Director of USF’s School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, to the Florida Board of Physical Therapy. The Board is comprised of seven members appointed by the Governor: five licensed physical therapists and two consumer members whose charge is to protect the public and make Florida the healthiest state in the nation through health care licensure, enforcement, and information.

The article, "Reasons Identified for Seeking the American Physical Therapy Association Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (APTA CCIP) in Florida” will be published in an upcoming issue.
