COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

The School of Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine (COM), University of South Florida Health (USF Health) seeks an outstanding scientist and an established academic leader for the position of Chair, Department of Molecular Medicine. The College of Medicine has identified four areas of Signature Interdisciplinary Research which include: Allergy, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Cancer Biology, Cardiovascular, and Neurosciences. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have research focused in one of these ‘signature’ programs.

 

USF Health consists of the colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health and the schools of Biomedical Sciences and Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Sciences. In partnership with its affiliated hospitals, USF Health’s research funding last year was $156 million. It has research and clinical affiliations with H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, the Tampa General Hospital, the All Children’s Hospital, the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, and the James A. Haley and Bay Pines VA Medical Centers.

 

Currently, the COM has over 540 full-time core faculty, over 450 medical students, and over 250 students in the biomedical graduate program. As a result of strategic reorganization, a School of Biomedical Sciences was established in 2006 to serve as the home for all basic and translational research within the College. With the objective of doubling its extramural funding in the next five years, faculty of the COM have outlined a bold strategic plan which includes recruitment of new tenured/tenure earning faculty and the establishment of state-of-the art Core facilities.

 

The Department of Molecular Medicine was established in 2006 following the strategic merger of former Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and of Medical Microbiology and Immunology. Some highlights and accomplishments of this Department in 2006-07 are listed below:

 

  • Over 31 tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenured faculty and 21 secondary faculty
  • Over 100 peer-reviewed publications in leading scientific journals by primary faculty and graduate students
  • 26 active research grants totaling $6,370,901. Forty-one submitted/pending research grant applications totaling $35,065,037
  • Forty six doctoral students and 49 masters students in various graduate programs

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

 

  • Minimum requirements include a MD, PhD, or MD/PhD
  • Is presently a NIH funded investigator with at least one (preferably two) R01 and with a sustained record of NIH funding
  • Is at the rank of a tenured Professor or is currently being considered for promotion to the rank of a Professor with tenure
  • Has distinguished record of scholarly activity as evidenced by extensive publication in high impact peer-reviewed journals
  • Has national and international reputation in his/her discipline as evidenced by the following:
    • Serves as a permanent member of NIH study section
    • Serves as an Editor/Co-Editor of discipline-specific journals
    • Serves on the Board of Scientific Organization, Foundation, etc
  • Has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, is a team player, and a change agent
  • Has demonstrated experience in building interdisciplinary programs
  • Has demonstrated commitment to the development and mentoring of faculty, staff, and students
  • Has a strong commitment to quality medical and graduate education
  • Embraces and facilities the accomplishment of our bold vision and has demonstrated success in a leadership position
