The Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program is a part of the Anesthesiology Critical Care Service at the University of South Florida, Department of Anesthesiology. The fellowship is fully accredited by the ACGME. Training with us will enable entry to the ABA examination system for certification of special competence in Critical Care.

The Critical Care Service is comprised of attending physicians, fellows, and residents. The continuum of education in Critical Care Medicine consists of twelve months of training in acute and long term life support of patients with multiple organ system derangement, and involvement in all aspects of management of the critically ill patient.

Fellows will receive instruction and experience in assessment, monitoring, and supportive care of cardiopulmonary, central nervous system, renal metabolic, hematologic, and gastrointestinal functions in the critically ill patient. Experience will be gained in airway management, airway pressure therapy, O2 therapy, bronchial hygiene therapy, nutritional support, management of cardiovascular disease, renal disease, infectious disease, pharmaco-therapy, and massive blood transfusions.

CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  1. Participation in daily didactic sessions.

  2. The fellows participate in daily clinical activities of the Critical Care Service. They participate in faculty-guided discussions and formulation of patient care plan. Supervision is provided by the assigned faculty person and director of each unit.

  3. The fellows supervise residents, medical students, nurses, therapists, and other para-medical personnel in the context of patient ,management in the ICU. Fellows participate in the teaching of medical students, anesthesiology residents and critical care nurses.

  4. Fellows participate in the care of patients in the general SICU, the trauma ICU, neurosciences ICU, cardiac surgical ICU, and burn ICU.

  5. Fellows have the option, and, in some instances may be required to spend time with other services, which may include pediatric ICU, medical ICU, infectious diseases, nephrology, transplantation surgery, and nutritional support.
