FrontPage is a useful tool for creating web pages but some aspects of its functionality will not work in the general computing environment. For the full functionality only Microsoft products can be used to deliver and view the web pages. Additionally, different browsers will display the same page differently. Information Services makes the following recommendations so that you will get the most from FrontPage without compatibility problems.
FrontPage has built in compatibility settings that help eliminate the commands that will not work due to the incompatibility.
For FrontPage 2003:
Select Tools|Page Options menu, and select the Authoring tab. Turn FrontPage and SharePoint technologies to none. Set browsers to Both Internet Explorer and Navigator. Set versions to 5.0/6.0 browsers.
For FrontPage 2000:
Select the Tools|Page Options menu command and set the following settings in the compatibility tab.
It is recommended that you do not use the component commands or advanced commands from the insert menu. These will not work as the necessary server extensions have been turned off for security reasons.
Use caution when using styles. Different browsers can display the styles differently.
It is recommended that you view the page you are developing in both Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari (for Mac users) to be sure that the page will look correct in both browsers. Be aware that the same page may look differently in the browsers. The only way to be sure of the look is to check the file with both browsers once it has been uploaded to the server.
The frontpage method of transfering files to a web site will not work with the HSC server. To upload you files to the server, use WS_FTP and directions in the other Web How-To Guides.
