I sent a file to the printer, and now I need to cancel it.
This is done in Windows in the Printers Window. Press Start, then Settings, then Printers. Double-click on the icon for the printer you were trying to print to. Any jobs that were in progress will be listed. If you want to clear out every job there, choose Printer, then Purge Print Jobs. If there is more than one job and you only want to cancel one, right-click on it and choose Cancel Printing.

You can check the status of your job in Windows in the Printers window. Follow the steps above, and look to see if the job is there. If not, try sending it again; if that doesn't work, close the program you sent the file from, restart the program, and send it again. Keep in mind that you should never send a file to the printer without saving it first. If you open the Printers window and don't see the printer you want to print to, it's not installed; you'll have to install it before you can print to it. If you've never installed the printer before, make sure it is hooked up correctly to the computer, then press Start, Settings, Control Panel and choose Add New Hardware. Follow the instructions in the Wizard to install your printer. If you know the printer has been installed before and has been working previously, close all programs and restart Windows (Start, Shut Down, Restart the Computer, Yes). If Windows somehow forgot that the printer was there, this usually restores it to the Printers window and you should be able to print to it again. If restarting Windows does not refresh its memory, you may have to re-add the printer. Pull up the Printers window and double-click on Add Printer. Follow the Wizard's instructions to add the printer.
I sent a document to the printer, and instead of my document, there's pages and pages of computer code gibberish printing out.
You're probably printing a PostScript job to a non-PostScript printer. First, cancel the job as outlined above in "I sent a job and now I need to cancel it." Then, when you are ready to print again, choose File, Print (instead of clicking the icon on the Toolbar) and make sure to choose the right printer. If it keeps going to the wrong printer, you can change it back by opening the Printers window (Start, Settings, Printers) and right-clicking the printer that you want as the default. Put a checkmark by Set as Default.

If you can tell whose job it is, ask them to check on their job and delete it if it is stalled. If you're in the COPH Lab A or B, ask the lab attendant for help, or call the Support Desk if the lab attendant is not on duty. If you're in one of the other computer labs and you can't tell whose job or jobs are there, call the Support Desk at 974-6288 and report the problem. If you're in an office, check around with your coworkers and see if you can find whose job it is and ask them to attend to it. If the job seems to belong to nobody, and it is stalled, you will have to get the job cleared out before being able to print again. Turn the printer off and leave it off for 5 to 10 minutes, and restart any machine that was trying to print to it. Turn the printer back on and try printing again; if this does not help, call the Support Desk at 974-6288.
