Several million dollars have been earmarked for new equipment purchase and equipment upgrading in the Core this year. A new digital TEM with cryo capability, tomography and remote microscopy capability and a low vacuum digital SEM with energy-dispersive x-ray analyzer and cryo stage are to be purchased. Both microscopes will be capable of being used from a remote site via a computer log-in. We will be adding a 405nm laser to our existing Leica SP2 confocal microscope to give us the ability to image fluorescent labels such as DAPI, along with the optics needed for the upgrade. In addition, a laser capture microdissection microscope and an image analysis microscope system (stereology) will be purchased. A new ultramicrotome and assorted specimen preparation devices will also be purchased to extend the capabilities of the Core. A multiphoton laser confocal microscope and a spinning disc confocal microscope are also being considered for purchase for the Core.
