Research Interests
Dr. Bai's laboratory focuses on the role of steroid and Vitamin D receptors in the development and treatment of human cancers. There are three on-going projects in the lab. 1) Role of the estrogen receptors (ER) in mediating the agonistic and antagonistic activity of estrogens and antiestrogens in human cancer cells. This project mainly investigate why tamoxifen, a SERM (selective estrogen receptor modulator) which is an ER antagonist widely used for the clinical treatment of ER-positive breast cancers, acts as an ER agonist to stimulate the development of uterine cancers. 2) Functional interaction between PTEN tumor suppressor and the androgen receptor in the growth and apoptosis of prostate cancer cells. The project investigates the novel function of PTEN tumor suppressors in determining the response of prostate cancers to androgen and androgen ablation therapy. 3) Vitamin D and its receptors in ovarian cancer development and treatment. This project focuses on the mechanism of Vitamin D action in normal and malignant ovarian surface epithelial cells and examines the in vitro as well as in vivo response of ovarian cancer cells to Vitamin D and synthetic Vitamin D analogs. The overall objectives of the research is, through the elucidation of the mechanism of action of steroid hormones and Vitamin D in human cancer cells, to provide molecular basis for either the development of new therapeutic strategies for cancer patients or the improvement of the patients' response to exiting anti-hormone therapies.
